Early on, I realized to succeed required getting and developing the right "mindset" to be my own boss. This meant getting over self-defeating talk and convincing "me" that I could do it.

I sold myself on the idea of going into business for myself, but that didn't take away the realistic fears and insecurities. I began as an independent mortgage broker with my sister as a receptionist in a tiny little office and I poured over Tony Robbin audios and listened to Les Brown tell "me" how I can do this or that no matter my circumstances or present situation.

When I started the business there was no paycheck, no set date when the money would arrive, and even worse I worried that the money might not show up at all.

This became my biggest fence to climb.

However, I kept going and eventually grew that operation to three offices with over 40 employees and even opened a Real Estate franchise some time later with over 40 people there as well.

This is not to impress you but to impress upon you that YES the obstacles will come but you must continually feed your mind with good books, great audios and even a coach or mentor to keep you going on those "not so good" days.

However, today I work from home and have no desire for that large overhead and responsibility but the same discipline and mindset tactics apply. In fact, they are even more important if you're where at home due to a lack of a real social group.

Just take one step today towards a better you. No lip service, just do something you have been putting off, pick up that Think and Grow Rich book and simply make an improvement today.

Ads Feature Phony Endorsements Attributed to Oprah Winfrey, Rachael Ray

At the request of the Federal Trade Commission, a U.S. district court has ordered the marketers of acai berry supplements, “colon cleansers,” and other products to temporarily halt an Internet sales scheme that allegedly scammed consumers out of $30 million or more in 2009 alone through deceptive advertising and unfair billing practices. The FTC will seek a permanent prohibition. Since 2007, victimized consumers have flooded law enforcement agencies and the Better Business Bureau with more than 2,800 complaints about the company.

Acai berry supplements, derived from acai palm trees that are native to Central and South America, have become popular in recent years. Last year, the Better Business Bureau named fake “free” trial offers – including those for acai supplements offered by the defendants in this case – as one of the “Top 10 Scams and Rip Offs of 2009.”

“Too many ‘free’ offers come with strings attached,” said David Vladeck, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “In this case, the defendants promised buyers a ‘risk free’ trial and then illegally billed their credit cards again and again – and again. We estimate that about a million people have fallen victim to this scam. As if that weren’t enough, there were fake endorsements from celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray for a product that didn’t work in the first place.”

The court order halts the allegedly illegal conduct of Central Coast Nutraceuticals, Inc., imposes an asset freeze, and appoints a temporary receiver over CCN and several related companies, while the FTC moves forward with its case to stop the company’s bogus health claims and other deceptive and unfair conduct.

The FTC charged CCN, two individuals, and four related companies with multiple violations, including deceptively advertising AcaiPure, an acai berry supplement, as a weight-loss product, and Colopure, a colon cleansing supplement, as an aid for preventing cancer.

The FTC complaint alleges that to sell AcaiPure, the marketers made dramatic claims on their website, including:

“WARNING! AcaiPure Is Fast Weight Loss That Works. It Was Not Created For Those People Who Only Want To Lose A Few Measly Pounds. AcaiPure was created to help you achieve the incredible body you have always wanted …USE WITH CAUTION! Major weight loss in short periods of time may occur.”

In pitching Colopure, the defendants cited frightening statistics about colon
cancer, while promising that their product would get rid of consumers’ “excess weight and toxic buildup.”

The marketers also deceived consumers about their purported “free” or “risk free” trial offers, and about the charges and refund terms consumers could expect, according to the FTC’s complaint. The FTC also alleges that the marketers made numerous additional unauthorized charges to consumers’ credit and debit card accounts.

The alleged deceptive practices include:

Falsely claiming that using AcaiPure could lead to rapid and substantial weight loss. Consumers were told that “[m]ost consumers taking AcaiPure report weight loss anywhere from 10-25 pounds in the first month.”
Making unproven claims that AcaiPure’s weight-loss claims are backed by “double-blind, placebo-controlled weight loss studies.”
Deceptively claiming that Colopure could help prevent colon cancer because it would “cleanse your entire system,” “detoxify your organs,” and break down and remove “toxic waste matter which may have been stuck in the folds and wrinkles of your digestive system for years and years.”
Falsely claiming that celebrities including Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray have endorsed products marketed by Central Coast Nutraceuticals, Inc. In marketing AcaiPure, the defendants declared on their homepage, “Acai Berry rated #1 SUPERFOOD by Rachael Ray.” A photo of Oprah appeared on the homepage, next to a quote that read in part, “Studies have shown that this little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world!” In fact, in declarations to the FTC, both celebrities denied endorsing AcaiPure.
Deceptively claiming that the marketers will provide full refunds to all consumers who request them, and that consumers who paid a nominal fee for a “free” trial supply of supplements would incur no risks or obligations. In fact, many consumers found it all but impossible to avoid paying full price for the products, typically $39.95 to $59.95.
Failing to adequately disclose that consumers would be automatically enrolled in a membership program and charged for additional monthly supplies of a product.
Failing to adequately disclose that consumers would be automatically charged for items other than the trial product unless they opted out.
Failing to adequately disclose the terms and conditions of trial programs, membership programs, and additional charges.
Making numerous unauthorized charges to consumers’ credit and debit card accounts.
Debiting consumers’ bank accounts on an automatic, recurring basis, without obtaining proper preauthorization. The unauthorized debits violated the FTC Act as well as the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E, according to the complaint.

“Visa is committed to ensuring that consumers trust digital currency when they shop online by protecting them from deceptive merchant marketing practices,” said Martin Elliott, Senior Business Leader, Payment System Risk, Visa Inc. “Deceptive merchant practices hurt the economy by eroding trust in e-commerce and undermining the vast majority of ethical merchants who deal and compete fairly. We have tightened enforcement of our rules against banks whose merchants generate excessive levels of cardholder disputes because of deceptive marketing. We also make it a priority to partner with law enforcement and agencies like the Federal Trade Commission and support their investigations such as this case.”

The FTC would like to thank the Better Business Bureau of Central, Northern & Western Arizona and Visa, Inc. for their invaluable assistance in this investigation.

The Commission vote authorizing the staff to file the complaint and seek a temporary restraining order was 5-0. The FTC filed its complaint and requested a temporary restraining order against the defendants from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division. On August 6, 2010, the court granted the request for the temporary restraining order.

The complaint also names as defendants Graham D. Gibson and Michael A. McKenzy, and four companies affiliated with Central Coast Nutraceuticals, Inc. – iLife Health and Wellness LLC; Simply Naturals LLC; Health and Beauty Solutions LLC; and Fit for Life LLC.

Ads like this are everywhere — from the telephone pole on the corner to your newspaper, email and favorite websites. The jobs might be different, but the message is the same — start earning a great living today working from home, even in your spare time.

When money’s tight, work-at-home opportunities can sound like just the thing to make ends meet. Some even promise a refund if you don’t succeed. But the reality is many of these jobs are scams. The con artists peddling them may get you to pay for starter kits or certifications that are useless, and may even charge your credit card without permission.

Others just don’t deliver on their promises. The ads don’t tell you that you may have to work a lot of hours without pay, or they don’t disclose all the costs you might incur — say, for placing newspaper ads, making photocopies, or buying the envelopes, paper, stamps and other supplies you need to do the job. People tricked by these ads have lost thousands of dollars, not to mention time and energy.

Here are some examples of work-at-home schemes to avoid:

Envelope Stuffing. For a “small” fee, the ad says, you’ll learn how to earn lots of money stuffing envelopes at home. But once you pay, you find out the promoter never had any work to offer. Instead, after you send in your money, you get a letter telling you to get other people, even your friends and relatives, to buy the same envelope-stuffing “opportunity” or some other product. The only way you can earn any money is if people respond the same way you did.

Assembly or Craft Work. According to the ad, you can make money assembling crafts or other products at home. You may have to invest hundreds of dollars for equipment or supplies — for example, a sewing or sign-making machine from the company, or materials to make items like aprons, baby shoes or plastic signs — or spend lots of hours producing goods for a company that has promised to buy them.

But after you’ve paid money and done the work, the company doesn’t pay you — supposedly because your work isn’t “up to standard.” Unfortunately, no work ever is, and you’re left with equipment and supplies — but without any income to show for it.

Rebate Processing. The ad in your email says you can earn money by helping to process rebates. And the fee for training, certification or registration is nothing compared to what you’ll earn processing rebates from home, according to the promises in the ad. It says the #1 certified work-at-home consultant behind the program will show you how to succeed like she did.

What you get are poorly written and useless training materials. There are no rebates to process, and few people ever see a refund.

Online Searches. The ad on the website piques your curiosity — earn $500 to $1000 a week, or even $7,000 a month, running Internet searches on prominent search engines and filling out forms. Even better, you can be your own boss and do the work right from home. What have you got to lose, except a small shipping and handling fee?

Unfortunately, you have a lot to lose. The company isn’t really connected with a well-known search engine — scammers are just lying to trick you into handing over your credit or debit card information. If you pay them even a tiny fee online, they can use your financial information to charge you recurring fees.

Medical Billing. The ads lure you with promises of a substantial income for full- or part-time work processing medical claims electronically — no experience needed. When you call the toll-free number, a sales rep tells you doctors are eager for help, and in exchange for your investment of hundreds — or thousands — of dollars, you’ll get everything you need to launch your own medical billing business, including the software to process the claims, a list of potential clients and technical support.

But companies rarely provide experienced sales staff or contacts in the medical community. The lists they give you often are out-of-date and include doctors who haven’t asked for billing services. The software they send may not even work. Competition in the medical billing market is fierce, and not many people who purchase these “opportunities” are able to find clients, start a business or generate revenue — let alone get back their investment and earn any income. Many doctors’ offices process their own medical claims, and doctors who contract out their billing function often use large, well-established firms, rather than someone working from home.

To avoid a medical-billing scam, ask for a sizable list of previous purchasers so you can pick and choose whom to contact for references. If the promoter gives only one or two names, consider that they may be “shills” hired to say good things. Try to interview people in person where the business operates. Talk to organizations for medical claims processors or medical billing businesses and to doctors in your community about the field. Finally, consult an attorney, accountant or other business advisor before you sign an agreement or make any payments up front.

When it comes to business opportunities, there are no sure bets. Promises of a big income for work from home, especially when the “opportunity” involves an up-front fee or divulging your credit card information, should make you very suspicious. It doesn’t matter if the ad shows up in a trusted newspaper or website — or if the people you talk to on the phone sound legitimate. The situation demands both research and skepticism.

Get Answers in Writing

Legitimate work-at-home program sponsors should tell you — in writing — what’s involved in the program they’re selling. Here are some questions to ask:

What tasks will I have to perform? (Ask the program sponsor to list every step of the job.)
Will I be paid a salary or will I be paid on commission?
What is the basis for your claims about my likely earnings? Do you survey everyone who purchased the program? What documents can you show me to prove your claims are true before I give you any money?
Who will pay me?
When will I get my first paycheck?
What is the total cost of this work-at-home program, including supplies, equipment and membership fees? What will I get for my money?

The answers to these questions may help you determine whether a work-at-home program is legitimate, and if so, whether it’s a good fit for you.

You’ll also want to check out the company with your local consumer protection agency, state Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau, not only where the company is located, but also where you live. These organizations can tell you whether they’ve gotten complaints about a particular work-at-home program. But be wary: just because there aren’t complaints doesn’t mean the company is legitimate. Unscrupulous companies may settle complaints, change their names or move to avoid detection.

In addition, consider other people’s experience by entering the company or promoter’s name with the word complaints into a search engine. Read what others have to say. After all, you are making a decision that involves spending your money.

Where to Complain

If you have spent money and time on a work-at-home program and now believe the program may not be legitimate, contact the company and ask for a refund. Let company representatives know that you plan to notify law enforcement officials about your experience. If you can’t resolve the dispute with the company, file a complaint with these organizations:

The Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint or 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).
The Attorney General’s office in your state or the state where the company is located. Visit naag.org; the office will be able to tell you whether you’re protected by any state law that may regulate work-at-home programs.
Your local consumer protection offices.
Your local Better Business Bureau at bbb.org.
Your local postmaster. The U.S. Postal Service investigates fraudulent mail practices. Visit postalinspectors.uspis.gov.
The advertising manager of the publication that ran the ad. The manager may be interested to learn about the problems you’ve had with the company.

"Official" Checks Are The Latest Spin In Mystery Shopper Schemes

So you think you can collect a juicy fee from your state government for a few hours of shopping at the mall? Sorry, but that’s not how tax dollars are really spent.

Trash that $3,400 check from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. It may look like an authentic unemployment benefits check, bearing the official bank routing number used by that agency. But despite what an accompanying letter may say, there are no state-funded programs to be a “mystery shopper” at a local Sears or Wal-Mart or to wire thousands of dollars to London to evaluate Western Union’s service.

“These checks are being sent all over the U.S.,” says Jeff Hentschel, a spokesman for the Tennessee agency. “Just yesterday I got a call from someone in Illinois who received one.”

Credibility from the state capital

Official-looking checks that purport to be from government agencies are the latest bait in mystery shopping scams—a ruse that promises easy money if you’ll just visit local stores and restaurants and then evaluate prices and services.

The scam begins when a check arrives in your mailbox. You’re instructed to quickly deposit it in your bank account, then spend some of the money at a particular business, keep some for your “work” and wire transfer the lion’s share elsewhere, typically overseas (appraising service at MoneyGram or Western Union is part of your assignment, you’re told).

But the check is counterfeit—which can take your bank weeks to discover. No money enters your account, and you end up on the hook for everything you spent at the mall, and for what you wired overseas—to the scammers, of course.

Recently, at least 10 people tried to deposit bogus Tennessee unemployment checks, says Hentschel. “Consider that on average, we’re sending out about 150,000 unemployment checks each week. So there are a lot of checks out that can be modified.”

In a variation of the scheme, some scammers are sending out checks for $4,940 supposedly issued by the state of Maryland. They bear dead-on signatures of the state’s comptroller and treasurer. Such details lend a lot of credibility “in making people feel more secure in thinking they’re getting a valid state check,” says Joseph Shapiro of the office of the comptroller of Maryland. The checks were really sent by con artists in Canada.

How to protect yourself

Legitimate mystery shopper gigs do exist, and here’s what you can expect from them:

No upfront payment. “Shoppers usually get paid after the assignment is completed,” says Kelly Hancock, spokesperson for the Mystery Shopping Providers Association, whose 300-member companies hire shoppers for millions of undercover visits each year.

Payment of $8 to $20 per shop.

No instructions to complete a wire transfer overseas, where the money will be beyond the jurisdiction of U.S. law enforcement—likely never to be recovered.

Secret Shopper Scam

There are disreputable companies scamming shoppers. Some charge a fee for information on becoming a shopper. We do not and have never charged a shopper to affiliate with us. One of the latest and more serious we've heard about is a company sending out large advance cashiers checks. The shopper is told to send a MoneyGram or Western Union to a person in Canada, keeping part of the check for themselves. However, the check is not legitimate and bounces, leaving the shopper without any money to cover the MoneyGram. For more information, see FakeChecks.org.

Unfortunately, these companies use various web addresses of reputable companies like ours in their ads. Be assured that these practices have nothing to do with our company and our only interaction with shoppers is to pay them for legitimate shops done for us. Shadow Shopper Scam Alert

We have received reports from various sources that an individual, group of individuals or business is posing as ShadowShopper and sending substantial checks in the mail along with a letter with the ShadowShopper logo on it. They ask you to cash the check, then send them a fee for "providing you with work." ShadowShopper is NOT sending out these letters or checks. They are completely false and the checks will bounce and you will be out any money you send them.

The nature of the internet is anonymous, so it makes since that if you are doing business online you would be nervous about whom you are dealing with. How do you know that “Stan Darsh” from Flatbush, Brooklyn, who is going to design website banners for you, but lost his password to your network isn’t actually a Nigerian Scammer who has phished Stan’s password and is just waiting to get his mitts on your corporate credit card? In the early days of the internet there was no way to know, but thanks to innovations in technology you no longer have to fear the anonymity of the internet when doing business.
Out of Band Authentication (OOBA) is a revolutionary process that allows you to verify that someone is who they really say they are by confirming multiple channels of communication that the person in question registers with a verification service beforehand. Let’s say you employ contract workers all over the United States that log into your secure virtual private network from their home offices. Now let’s say one of your employees, Stan Darsh, sends you an email from his personal email account telling you he can’t find his password anywhere and needs it to log into your company’s virtual private network (VPN) and finish his work. You’ve never talked to Stan before, you don’t know him personally and you have never seen his face, so how do you know this email is really from him at his home computer?

In case you didn’t know, there are people who scour the internet all day looking for vulnerabilities in people’s servers and VPN’s, trying to steal as much information they can get their hands on, especially financials. These people are the biggest caveat when it comes to doing business online, and you need to protect yourself from them.

When you use an Out of Band Authentication service your employees would register not only a trusted computer with a unique IP address, but also a trusted telephone number. So say it really is Stan who is locked out of your VPN, he logs into your pre-selected authentication service’s website and selects the “lost password” option. Stan’s computer sends an XML file from his personal (or corporate) server to an OOBA service, the OOBA service gets this file and dials Stan’s pre-registered phone number and sends an XML file back to Stan’s computer with a unique and randomly generated numeric code, Stan’s phone rings and he is prompted to enter the randomly generated numeric code into his phone. This verifies that Stan is in control of his trusted computer and his trusted phone line, thereby authenticating him as the actual user in question and allowing him to reset his password.

If scammers and phishers see that you use an Out of Band Authentication service they most likely won’t even try and get into your servers or network, they generally understand that you have multiple safety precautions in place to protect your network. If you do end up going with an OOBA service it is still important to remain vigilant when doing business online, but you can feel a lot more secure knowing you can’t verify someone’s identity easily and without doubt.

Their Terms of Service state: “Publishers may not label the ads with text other than ‘sponsored links’ or ‘advertisements.’ This includes any text directly above our ads that could be confused with, or attempt to be associated with Google ads.”

This is to keep visitors from becoming confused and barking up Google’s tree when they clicked on an ad that led to a porn site instead of the recipe site they were expecting to visit.

8. Avoid keyword spamming and other divisive tricks

You may be tempted to buy one of those “generates thousands of key-word rich pages in seconds” programs that are so popular these days but I’ll tell you this: Their days are numbered. Google is wise to such shenanigans and they will be hot on your trail. Other prohibited gimmicks include:

• ”Sneaky” page redirects that send a visitor off to a different site then they were expecting to visit.

• Multiple sites, domains, pages, etc. which have substantially duplicate content.

• Hidden text or links of any type.

• Excessive outbound links on any page. Google recommends no more than 100. I’d keep it way below that.

• And here is a nugget of wisdom straight from Google’s mouth: “Do not participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your website may be affected adversely by those links.

9. Don’t advertise anything on Google’s prohibited items list.

It’s a lot shorter lists than PayPal’s or eBay’s, but it includes a lot of the same stuff like hacking/cracking content, porn, illegal drugs, gambling sites, beer or hard alcohol (I guess wine is OK), weapons, and the other usual stuff.

10. And the 10th dumbest thing NOT to do with Home Business Opportunity - Google AdSense is to let the other nine things stop you from running an honest site that’s designed to make the most out of this very profitable opportunity that Google offers!

What Do Transcriptionists Do?

Transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other healthcare professionals and transcribe them into documents such as operating room notes, autopsy reports, discharge summaries and other documents which then become part of a patient's medical record. What Kind of Training Must MT's Have?

In the course of my research, the first thing I learned was that you can't just jump into a career as an MT without training. A medical transcriptionist is truly a medical language specialist who must be aware of standards and requirements that apply to the health record, as well as the legal significance of medical transcripts.

Reports of patient care take many forms, including histories and physical examinations, progress reports, emergency room notes, consultations, operative reports, discharge summaries, clinic notes, referral letters, radiology reports, pathology reports, and an array of documentation spanning more than 60 medical specialties and subspecialties! Thus, the medical transcriptionist, or medical language specialist, must be well versed in the language of medicine. ".

Medical transcription is a medical language specialty, so you can see that it requires not only the proper training, but also an investment in reference materials and a commitment to ongoing learning as technology and terminology changes. Equally important to the long-term success of a Transcriptionist is having the right personality for the job. Some qualities that successful MT's share are:

It's also important to note that most companies require candidates for telecommute MT positions to have on-site experience- as is the case with most all telecommute jobs. In many cases, 2 years of experience working in a hospital or doctor's office is required. If this is a field that you are truly interested in, getting those 2 years under your belt and then being qualified to telecommute is a pretty good deal.

The second thing I found was that there sure were a lot of courses out there. They ranged in price from a couple hundred dollars to a few thousand! I was overwhelmed!
